109. Puff the Magic Dragon

Watercolor Posted on November 9, 2015 00:46

Todays SketchDaily theme on Reddit was “Lyrics interpretation”. For some reason this was the first song that came to my mind.

So I decided I might ask my kid, if he wanted to join in this challenge too. He agreed and we spend the entire afternoon and a good chunk of tonight painting to illustrate “Puff the Magic Dragon”.

We had so much fun tossing ideas at each other, helping each other with choosing colors and just working on something together 🙂

108. Artists Trading Cards

Watercolor Posted on November 9, 2015 00:32

I rediscovered a concept. Years ago I saw a small notice about artists doing small cards to trade with each other. The cards were mostly traded at various events, but the point was, that the cards were traded for free. They are a way to share a bit of work with fellow artists.

I liked the idea so much, that I printed that note with the description and kept it for who knows how many years. But since I did not really have connections to trade with anyone I never tried making any cards.

A week back I saw the cards mentioned again in the artists corner of Reddit. At times they trade cards, and if I sign up for the next round I could join too, trading with people all over the world! So since the SketchDaily theme for Friday was “Free draw” I wanted to get this started.

My aunt had just sent me an awesome watercolor she had made of various autumn mushrooms and leaves. That inspired me so much that I went to my garden to find stuff to draw and then went for todays painting. Watercolored artists trading cards – theme: “Autumn apples”. I absolutely love how these turned out.

“The Terrorist” (our playful cat) was very interested in helping me out.

Especially the elderberries he loved helping me with, tilt they were crushed all over the table in purple puddles. He looks so deceptively peaceful here, but those hazel leaves in the foreground were on his radar. They made a funny noise when he padded them down with a paw and chewed on them. It was the white rowan berries he ended up abducting off the table and down all over the floor. Stupid cat 😀

106. Madam Blå

Watercolor Posted on November 4, 2015 23:30

Today it was time for my Wednesday water color class. I drew and painted this little water color still life. I did not have enough time to finish it in class, so I brought it home and finished it as well as I could without the actual objects in front of me.

I like how it turned out and this was first time I got that devious masking liquid stuff working. I had it for months now, but never did it work as I hoped for. I went to the shop where I bought it, because it was all dried up, gooey, and impossible to work with. I got a new one, that had the exact same problem and in the end I gave up on it.

Till today. I decided to try one more time, and as it suddenly, magically worked, I used it after all. It made a nice shiny effect on the old blue coffee pot.

81. Watercolor- and Drawing Classes Started

Watercolor Posted on September 9, 2015 17:19

I enrolled for drawing and watercolor painting classes every other Wednesday. Classes started today. It was great fun working with other artists and having a teacher to nudge me to discovering new adventures with my art. So far I did half a painting of a landscape. I snatched a photo with my phone of it. Sadly I can’t finish the painting until next class in two weeks, since I left the painting to dry at the school.

I was struggling with the wet in wet technique. The paper was bulging and the wet color was pooling in the valleys, so it was incredibly hard to control. Next time I might bring my own watercolor paper, it’s a bit less prone to distort as much when it gets wet.

Yesterday I went to buy masking liquid. I have heard it’s a great tool to use when painting watercolors to keep parts of the paper free of paint. White is impossible to get any other way and it’s really hard to keep white parts on an evenly colored background, if you have to paint all the way around many times. I was looking forward to trying that tool out. But something is wrong with it, it’s all thick and impossible to apply so I have to go back to the store and get a new one 🙁 Next time it will be easier!

56. My Sassy Red Boots

Watercolor Posted on January 9, 2015 18:41

Today I decided to find my old watercolors. I am happy I did. First time for a very long time I finished a water color painting and I enjoyed it. My red sassy boots are looking pretty good 🙂
