264. Sketchdaily Watercolors Start Up

Watercolor Posted on August 13, 2023 20:23

I ran out of small circles to draw patterns in when I was on vacation. Perhaps I had enough of patterns too. But I was not done drawing – which was the entire point of the patterns! I still wanted to work with no stress and no huge commitments, but I also needed a little push to keep going. So I looked up Sketchdaily on Reddit that I worked with years back. They had an art exchange with deadline for signup in about a week and the requirements was that participants needed a streak of at least 15 (aka 15 days of drawing). I always wanted to try out being part of an art exchange so here was the push I needed! And so the drawing continued. One drawing a day was my goal, but at the beginning I did have to catch up a bit more to reach the requirements before deadline, so I drew and painted the daily prompt plus a day’s prompt that had already passed. I find I absolutely love the format of a daily watercolor and the community at Sketchdaily is super supportive too. My only problem now is to catch up the blog here because the pile of drawings to show off here is growing rapidly. So here are my renditions of the last 27 days of Sketchdaily prompts, with the newest from today first 🙂

“Angry Fish”
“High Society”
Free draw Friday (FDF) I chose to paint an alpine flower I saw on my recent vacation
“Regatta”
“Embroidery” Uhm …well… that somehow turned into a garden snail today 😀
“Bump in the night”
“Gloomy”
“Circle of Life”
“Dusty old books”
Free draw Friday – I went for a girl in my regional costume
“Large Birds”
“Disguise”
“Sandwiches”
Microscopic
“Witches”
“Ogre”
Free draw Friday – I went for an Air balloon.
“Arches”
“Irritant”
“Loud Things”
“Wanted”
“Glass”
“Hedgehog”
“Free draw Friday” I went for a very quick owl.
“Judge”
“Sad lost puppy”
“Warning Sign”

Whew! And with that we are all caught up with my drawings, paintings and sketches 🙂

263. Doodles and Zentangle

Ink Posted on August 13, 2023 19:26

As a stepping stone to get back into drawing I figured something light and easy to do, that’s not very time consuming was needed. And so I made those tiny little circles to fill with whatever pattern I come up with at the time. After researching I found out they actually have a name – they are Zentangles! Well some of them are anyway. There’s rules around Zentangles (patterns should not be actual recognizable objects like strawberries or flowers), but there’s no rules when it comes to my doodles. Whatever hits me at the time goes! I did have quite a lot of fun with these while I was on vacation and they ended up to be quite the collection of zentangles and patterns.

Raku Posted on August 8, 2023 01:57

Back in 8th grade I was fortunate enough to stay a week as apprentice with one of my school mates dad who was an amazing artist and potter. That week was one of the first times the zen of creating first hit me hard. That sensation of knowing exactly what’s in my minds eye and then working tirelessly to will it to materialize in 3D while the hours fly by. And then the absolute wonder when it happens successfully. I made a few pottery pieces there – some he helped me create but especially one I remember grew from my imagination on the very last day. It was a tiny horse laying sleeping. Unfortunately I later lost that horse but I do still have my two birds that are unglazed copies of his amazing stoneware artwork:

My wonderful cousin, my sweet Mom and I have had a TON of fun with creating pottery the past year, Raku style particularly. So here are some of my recent work from our raku playtimes.

261. Catching up

Sketch Posted on August 8, 2023 01:36

I am a bit behind in posting my art here. So the next posts will be me catching up on drawings, paintings and a bit of pottery from the past year or so.

From June 2022 I have a small ball point pen drawing done on the airplane on my way to Iceland.

I had a long break from drawing but around December I snuck my way back to it. I made a jar with small bits of paper with words on them. And for each drawing I pulled random words from it as my prompts. They were just supposed to be small quick pencil sketches, nothing fancy and nothing time consuming. They were just to ease myself back into being creative and were not really meant to be shown anywhere. It worked! Here are a few examples:

Prompt: Fairy, Unicorn, Forest
Prompt: Grizzly, Soapcar, Cloud, Potted Plant
Prompt: Zebra, Basket, Ladybug
Prompt: Egg, Cat, Café, Chandelier
Prompt: Lamb, Poppy, Bottle, Big eyes

259. Annas Unicorn

Sewing Posted on August 1, 2023 15:46

My niece LOVES unicorns. I had a crazy idea on what to gift her. If I wanted to carry this out though I was on a serious time crunch. So I called my Mom asking her if she would like to come join and help me get it done. She went YES! She is such a rockstar <3 Soon we went to work. We had a quick sketch of my idea and a pile of fabrics so we both worked from dawn till dusk and then some for 6 days to turn a fleeting idea into something real:

Upscaling the sketch to create pattern pieces, drawing and cutting pattern from taped together printer paper, selecting suitable fabrics, pinning, cutting, ironing, placing the pieces, sewing and embroidering.

And in the end we had created this applique art work. “Annas Unicorn”. I absolutely adore the result. Thank you so much Mom for helping me create this. It was great fun working together and a wonderful day when we gifted the finished quilt to Anna for her 4th birthday 🙂

258. Castello di Badia Well

Watercolor Posted on April 21, 2022 02:24

For Easter we went on a cycle trip to Tuscany. We stayed at Airbnb Castello di Badia in Poggibonsi. The landscape and the surrounding towns like San Gimignano, Volterra and Monteriggioni are amazing and cycling on the old pilgrimage road “Via Francigena” offers some stunning views (and some evil uphill battles 😉 but this castle where we stayed was absolutely magical. I Had to draw the well and found a bright sunny spring day to spend hours playing with this project. I think it’s the first time I let a drawing actually fill up a double spread in my sketchbook:

And after having painted with watercolor and colored pencils – and a bit of post scan editing to fix the center of the book crease:

The sketchbook is not really made for watercolor and it shows in how much the paper is buckling when wet. But even though that is in some ways annoying, painting on this rather cheap paper in an actual sketchbook also has a certain gritty charm to it that I really like. That said it could be interesting to repaint this on real watercolor paper too just to see the difference. Here is the well from a slightly different angle:
